240 million voted for last season’s Big Brother Naija, which has left tongues wagging among Nigerians who queried the benefits attached to the reality show to the country.

The monetary value of the record-breaking 240 million votes from the ‘Pepper Dem Gang’ season was reported to be about N7.2bn.

Recalled that the winner of the last year show walked away with the whopping sum of N60million worth of prize.

This year’s winner is to get N85million worth of price.

Despite its economic value, several public figures have called for its scrab over its impact on the psyche of Nigerian Youths and culture.

In August, the Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife called for the scrab of Big Brother Naija reality over its impact on Nigerian youths.

He said “In the last general election, the total number of votes cast was around 27 million while over 170 million people voted during the 2019 Big Brother Naija reality show.

“This is a practical reality of who Nigerian youths are and where our priorities lie as Nigerians. The funny side in all of these is that we still go to bed, have a good sleep and wake up with the hope to meet a Nigeria we didn’t create. Nigerian Youths! Nigerian Youths!! Nigerians Youths!!!”

Reno Omokari a popular critic recently condemned the ongoing fifth season saying “Nothing is being produced. No jobs are being created. No tangible physical value is being created. There is no treasure in this venture, only pleasure.”

According to him the ongoing ‘Lockdown’ season has failed to add any value and another ploy to exploit Nigerian youths.
In his series of tweets, Reno disclosed that it cost N2.5bn to build the 2020 #BBNaija house despite the hardship Nigerian’s economy is faced with due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For veteran Nigerian singer, Charly Boy, BBNaija has made Nigerian youths misplace their focus of engaging more on matters of national importance.

He compared the tractions BBNaija gets on social media to important national issues.

Despite all the reactions, most Nigerian youths who spoke to our correspondents, opined that BBNaija is a great platform to ‘have fun and unwind.”

However, others tagged the show as “immoral and shameful”
