PDP responds to overturning of Edo governorship primary

Asue Ighodalo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chapter in Edo State responded on Thursday to the annulment of their governorship primary, affirming that Asue Ighodalo remains their chosen candidate.

Federal High Court Justice Inyang Ekwo in Abuja invalidated the February 2024 primary that selected Ighodalo, citing the unlawful exclusion of 378 delegates from the voting process.

Despite this ruling, the PDP has reiterated that Ighodalo, a prominent lawyer from Lagos, will still represent the party in the upcoming September 21 gubernatorial election in Edo State.

“To set the record straight, Dr. Asue Ighodalo’s position as our party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections remains secure. The Federal High Court’s judgment does not impact his candidacy,” stated Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the Edo PDP Chairman, in a post-ruling statement.

The party attributed the spread of misinformation about Ighodalo’s candidacy to unnamed individuals threatened by his growing popularity.

While these individuals were not named, the PDP urged its members to stay calm and assured them that there was no reason for concern.

“We are aware that certain parties, intimidated by Dr. Ighodalo’s increasing popularity, are spreading false rumors about his disqualification. We encourage our loyal supporters to remain calm and steadfast as there is no cause for alarm,” the statement added.
