Nigerian gov declares Monday public holiday

In a Friday announcement from Birnin Kebbi, Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has declared Monday a public holiday to honour the start of the new Islamic calendar, 1st Muharram 1446AH, which falls on Sunday.

The decision, conveyed through a statement by Auwal Manu-Dogondaji, the state’s Commissioner for Establishment, emphasizes the significance of the Islamic New Year. As a result, the public holiday has been shifted to Monday.

Manu-Dogondaji extended heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim community on the arrival of the new Islamic year. He encouraged continued prayers for the peace, security, and prosperity of Kebbi State and the nation at large.

“I convey the governor’s congratulations to the entire Muslim Ummah worldwide,” stated the commissioner.
