FCTA begins demolition of unapproved buildings in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced the demolition of 50 illegal duplexes and bungalows in Sabon Lugbe, Abuja.

Leading the operation on Thursday, Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the Department of Development Control at the FCTA, stated that the affected structures were built without proper authorization by land speculators.

According to Galadima, the southwest section of Sabon Lugbe falls within the designated Phase 5 District of the Federal Capital City (FCC).

He emphasized the need for prospective buyers to carry out due diligence before acquiring property in the area, warning against relying on false claims about land legality.

“We had earlier cautioned that we would take action against these land grabbers,” Galadima said. “This demolition exercise is just the beginning, starting with 10 buildings. We will return tomorrow to complete the removal of all illegal structures—nearly 50 duplexes and bungalows in total.”

He also highlighted other areas affected by unauthorized developments, including Idu Train Station (now part of Gosa and Kyami), Apo Tarfi, and parts of Lugbe.

Galadima warned that illegal developments within the Federal Capital Territory would not be tolerated.

“These speculators are misleading unsuspecting residents into believing the areas will be incorporated into Phase 5 of the FCC. There is no such integration planned,” he said.

“Illegality remains illegality, and we are committed to removing every unauthorized structure in the FCT,” Galadima concluded.

This demolition drive is part of the FCTA’s broader efforts to maintain order and enforce urban development regulations within the capital city.
