How Oshiomhole opposed son’s nomination as commissioner – Deputy gov, Idahosa
Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has dismissed allegations of nepotism surrounding the appointment of Cyril Oshiomhole, son of former governor and ex-APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, as the state’s Commissioner for Health.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, Idahosa revealed that Adams Oshiomhole had opposed his son’s nomination.
This clarification comes amidst public speculation that Cyril’s appointment was influenced by his father’s political prominence.
The nomination, made by Governor Monday Okpebholo shortly after his inauguration on November 12, sparked debates about state capture.
However, Idahosa reassured the public that the decision was based solely on merit and the administration’s commitment to strengthening Edo State’s health sector.
“This position has nothing to do with Adams Oshiomhole. In fact, Adams opposed it. He was against the nomination because of the vision the governor has for the people of Edo State. The governor made the decision to appoint Cyril based on competence, not because of his father.”
Idahosa also referred to Cyril as a skilled medical doctor who is well-qualified to be part of the cabinet.
He said, “Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and his son, like any other individual, has his own destiny. Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor. He studied in Nigeria and went on to further his studies in the United States. He is fully qualified to be in the cabinet.
“The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from holding a position he is competent to manage. He will serve as Commissioner for Health based on merit.”
